Job boards are used by millions of people every day looking for the best and latest jobs in their fields. Using job boards in the right way can often give your job ad some great reach and get you some great applications.

First, you’ll need a job ad. Apart from finding new employees, writing a great job ad can be a struggle in and of itself. 

When writing a job ad, it’s best to include as much information about the job as possible, including:

  • Duties
  • Hours
  • Benefits

Once you’ve created a job ad, decide where to post it. Some job boards, like Indeed, offer a free posting service where you can post as many job ads as you like. 

However, there are other job boards that may give your job ad better reach. There are job boards that specialize in particular industries, like caterer.com [2] and Culinary Agents [3] for the hospitality industry. You may have an easier time attracting the right talent on specialist job boards since sites like Indeed are for the general user.   

Post jobs on your website

If your website gets a lot of traffic, advertising it on your website on your ‘careers’ or home pages will probably generate a lot of interest.

There are also job boards out there that crawl the internet looking for job postings on company websites that then scrape the information and create new job ads that duplicate the information on your site. This is an easy, passive way to get your job ad in front of as many eyeballs as possible. 

You’ll also want to use the best SEO practices to make sure your page is as attractive to search engines as possible. Do some keyword research for the type of job you’re hiring for and see if there are any particular keywords you can target. 

For instance, if you’re hiring a marketing manager for your branch in New York City, “marketing jobs new york” and “ marketing manager job nyc” might be keywords you’ll want to incorporate into your ad. 

Post jobs on social media

A great way to cast the net even wider is to post your job openings on social media. Using sites like Facebook and Twitter to boost the exposure of your ad can be another great way of drawing interest from quarters you may not have expected. 

Facebook has job-related groups based on professional interests and fields, while on Twitter you can use relevant hashtags to target candidates with the expertise or in the location you’re looking for.

However, the best social media platform you can use to find new employees is LinkedIn.

LinkedIn is one of the best tools you have in your hiring arsenal. As the internet’s premier networking site for professionals, LinkedIn is a treasure trove of potential contacts and candidates that you can browse. 

If you have a business account with LinkedIn, or if your human resources staff have their own premium accounts, you can use the site to browse profiles, create jobs ads, and advertise with paid ad campaigns. 

Use recruitment agencies

One drawback of using job boards and social media is that you can often get a lot of substandard applications from unqualified applicants. Job boards and social media are so open and public that a lot of companies end up with a deluge of irrelevant applications that they have to wade through to find the few gems. Needless to say, this wading ends up taking up a lot of time and resources for you and your human resources department. 

Recruitment agencies take care of all the time-consuming aspects of looking for new employees, from writing job ads and posting ads on job boards to conducting initial interviews and sorting through CVs. Once the agency has identified a few good candidates, they will set up interviews for you. So, if you don’t want to deal with all the work involved in finding new employees, agencies are the way to go. 

However, there can be some drawbacks to using agencies. Agencies charge for their services, and you might end up paying more to find a really good candidate than you intended. 

Join job fairs

Job fairs are an interactive experience, great for high-volume hiring and connecting with potential employees.  In one day, you can contact and pre-screen dozens of new candidates for your new openings. 

You’ll want to keep your eyes peeled for ads for local job fairs and annual career events. These are great places to recruit people for the retail and hospitality sectors. There are also lots of fairs targeted at particular groups, like women, immigrants, and people with disabilities.
